Over the past few weekends this spring I’ve been going to a lot of my kids’ activities. Birthday parties, soccer practices, soccer tryouts, lacrosse practices, lacrosse games, and on and on. One thing that has stood out to me at all of these events is how poorly dressed the dads are. Look, I get it, these are early morning or evening activities for children. For whom or why should anyone get dressed up? I’m certainly not going to wear a three-piece suit to any of these things. However, you’re not going to catch me in athleisure pants and a t-shirt either. Or, God forbid, a full matching nylon track suit for that matter. So what are we, guys who want to dress a little more stylish, supposed to do when faced with casual events like this?
This is an outfit that I’ve been wearing on most of my weekend outings lately, and, well, it’s just been perfect. On those colder spring days I’ve added the sweater. When the weather turns a little warmer, I ditch the sweater. Sometimes I’ll swap the shirt for a button down too. With just a few tweaks here and there I can wear this outfit all the way from the 40s to the 70s. What I like so much, as well, is that I don’t feel out of place or overdressed. Sure, I’m definitely not the most casually dressed person on the sidelines, but I’m also not out of place.
The real star of this outfit is the Suitsupply field jacket. It’s lightweight, water-repellant, and goes with almost my entire wardrobe. I think I would even get away with wearing it with a pair of trousers and a sweater, as opposed to jeans. Oh, and it has tons of pockets for carrying all of the things my kids don’t want to. It’s like a pair of cargo shorts, but oh so much better.
