The Look for Less: Billions Style

Posted on March 30, 2018March 30, 2018 By Drew

In case you missed it this week, Showtime’s hit show Billions returned, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Billions is one of my favorite shows. The writing is superb. The dialogue is probably the best on television. The acting is phenomenal. How could you go wrong with Paul Giamatti, Damien Lewis, Maggie Siff, etc.? And the storylines have more twists and turns that the Merritt Parkway in autumn. Of course every review you read is going to tell you the same things. However, one other item that sticks out to me is the Billions style. Whoever is running the Billions wardrobe department deserves a raise.

What I love about the costume design of the show is how the clothes are so tied into who the characters are. While the viewer is never sure about who to root for, there is no confusion about who each characters is and what they value. I mean, all you need to know about Bobby Axelrod is neatly wrapped up in his famous season one quote, “What’s the point of having ‘F you’ money if you never get to say ‘F you’?”

Today, I wanted to pull al little outfit inspiration based on the Billions style that I’ve come to love. I’m focusing on my three favorite male characters as this is a men’s style blog, but I’m sure one could pull plenty of ideas from Wendy, Lara, or Taylor too.

Chuck

Billions Style: Chuck Rhoades

Chuck Rhoades is all business and presents himself with purpose in everything he does. But behind his facade are layers of insecurity and self-loathing. He shields that soft underbelly with a formal suit of armor, a custom three-piece chalk stripe suit. On those days when you need to be at your peak, but might not quite be feeling it, this is the look.

Axe

Billions Style: Bobby “Axe” Axelrod

Bobby “Axe” Axelrod loves his family, money, and loyalty (maybe not in that order). He also loves mind games. Nothing throws big money off more than athlesiure in the boardroom. This is the subversive power play.

Wags

Billions Style: Wags

Mike Wagner is a man after my own heart. Even though he goes off the rails from time to time, he appreciates the finer things in life (like properly prepared AND properly eaten sushi). He has mastered the upscale business casual look with soft colors to suit his skin tone and suit cuts to fit his frame.

Three men, three very different styles. Let me know in the comments below which Billions style you are. Are you a Chuck, an Axe, or a Wags. And be sure to check out season three of Billions or catch up on seasons one and two!

What Is This Blog About?

Posted on May 27, 2015October 4, 2017

Sorry for the delay in new posts, everyone.  I’d like to say that I took a few days off for Memorial Day Weekend, but, unfortunately, that’s far from the truth.  I had meetings almost every day.  On the way to one meeting, I blew out my tire and had to…

Three Ways to Wear Pink This Summer

Posted on June 20, 2016November 15, 2017

I used to go to grad school with a guy who wore this pink polo shirt quite frequently. He stood around 6’7” with an extremely fair, Irish-American complexion. The shirt was bright, neon, and electric. I mean, it was a bit much. Knowing what colors work with your skin tone is a huge asset in building your personal style. I also think with colors like pink, balance and contrast are crucial. Pink works extremely well with blues and greens. Those were the three colors my wife and I used at our wedding, and there’s no way I’m going to tell her she’s wrong.

Let It Wrinkle

Posted on July 2, 2019July 1, 2019

We live in a world of non-iron and easy-iron; a world with perfectly flat fabric and too crisp creases. It reminds me of the movie “The Matrix”. The first world the machines created were too perfect. The humans rejected it. That’s how I feel about the wrinkleless world in which…
