The ball has dropped, the trees are coming down, and we’ve left all the festive fun of the holidays behind us. Now, it’s time to move on to those two and a half unbearable months of snow, ice, and cold before spring starts to break through. However, just because the outside is dreary, stark, and gray, that doesn’t mean you have to dress to match. Sometimes I think adding a little color and style when the world doesn’t feel that way, is just what I need. With that in mind, I wanted to pull together a few winter clothes for men to achieve some cold weather style.
When temperatures drop below thirty and the sky looks gray and foreboding, the easiest thing for me to do is throw on a cozy sweatshirt and my most broken-in pair of jeans while I hibernate until mid-March. Honestly, it’s so hard to fight the urge sometimes, and that’s ok. I’ll wear the easy stuff on the days where I can’t be bothered, but there are those other times when I want more. I want a little flair. I want to look good while staying warm. I want some cold weather style.
One word above all others sticks in my head when I think about winter clothes for men: wool. Wool suits, wool coats, wool sweaters, wool socks. The only things I keep cotton are my shirts and my underwear, and the shirts are usually heavier weaves like oxford, herringbone, and twill. You would be surprised by the difference a thicker shirt can make. And if I need a little extra warmth, I’ll throw on an undershirt, even though I don’t usually wear one. Thanks a lot, Clark Gable.
Lately, I’ve enjoying a cigar outside on the weekends while watching a movie. I can tell you from personal experience that my woolen flannel trousers are warmer that even my heaviest jeans on a cold winter night. Wool just typically holds heat better than cotton, and for that I am thankful when lighting up one of my favorite sticks. Now, I don’t mean that denim doesn’t have its place in winter. I wear jeans all the time like when I’m just being casual hanging out, when I’m running errands, when I’m shoveling snow. But if I want to dress a little nicer, I’m wearing wool trousers.
