When I was a younger, what to wear to Christmas dinner was easy. As a kid I wore some sort of chinos (we called them khakis back then) with a sweater. As I got older the sweater turned into a classic blue blazer. But times changed. Over the recent years I’ve worn jeans, a suit, pajamas and stayed home. I’ve even recycled the outfit from my childhood. This year I want to wear something that’s classic but cool, stylish but comfortable, grown up but not stodgy. So I thought today I would take a looks at what I’m wearing to Christmas dinner. Feel free to replicate this outfit for any holiday dinner that you attend!
Flannel
Flannel walks the line perfectly between tweed and worsted wool, between casual and formal, between stylish and simple. This piece for Drake’s by G. Bruce Boyer spells it all out. I think flannel makes an idea fabric choice for a holiday dinner that has become more casual over the years. Plus it’s warm as hell. For my Christmas dinner outfit I took the jacket from my navy flannel suit and paired it with a pair of gray flannel trousers, both from Suitsupply.
Oxford Button Down
While technically casual, the OCBD has worked its way into American business culture over the decades and is not a bit more formal on this side of the pond. Additionally, these button-downs from Brooks Brothers are made from incredible cloth, feature mother-of-pearl buttons, and have no chest pocket upping their formaily just a bit.
Knit tie
Like the OCBD, the knit tie is also technically casual. However, it is still a tie. As such, most people will consider wearing tie more formal than not. Wearing a knit tie helps keep me in the middle. I did throw in a little wrinkle by wearing a grenadine tie. It’s still a knit, but just a bit more refined. This one is from Maison Leporem.
Loafers
What can I say about the loafer that hasn’t already been said? Moreover what can I say about the Gucci Horsebit loafer? I was just having a conversation with a friend the other night about how iconic, durable, classic, versatile, etc. these shoes are. I’ll never not own a pair. Yes, I love English Goodyear welted shoes, but these are too amazing to not own. I know they’re expensive, but I think they are worth it (especially if you have a good cobbler who can re-sole them).
