It’s that time of year again. Forget the holidays, Valentine’s Day is when more men struggle and scramble to pick out the perfect gift for their significant other. It’s such a challenge. I think there is so much social (media) pressure to choose the most romantic, most thoughtful, or most perfect presents. But here’s the real secret, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just sincere. Pay attention to what she likes, what her interests are. (If you aren’t doing that on a regular basis already, I would suggest starting.) However, sometimes we all need to get a little help. A few idea, as a jumping off point, can steer anyone in a more personalized direction. With that in mind, I’ve put together my Valentine’s Day gift guide for 2018. (Please keep in mind this is a guide geared toward straight men giving gifts to women, simply because that’s who I am, and that’s what I feel most confident in recommending.)
Like I said above, it’s important to pay attention to your wife’s, girlfriend’s, significant other’s interests throughout the year. This will help when the gift giving crunch time hits and you’re feeling stumped. Additionally, I would strongly bet that paying attention to her interests will also improve your relationship. Does she have a favorite author? Buy their newest book. Is she always searching for a pen? Give her a nice one that she will keep with her. Is she a supporter of the Women’s Movement? Support one of her favorite causes.
A quick word about more intimate gifts like jewelry, perfume, and lingerie. These can be fantastic gifts, and I’m going to include them in my Valentine’s Day gift guide. However, I would caution you to take an extra minute or two to think through whether that’s the right gift for her. Jewelry is such a personal item, that I would suggest something classic or check throughout the year to see if she’s been eyeing something up. Perfume depends a lot on body chemistry, so perhaps refilling an existing favorite or taking her fragrance shopping is the right way to go. Lingerie is probably the most risky gift, but it can be incredibly romantic. Your relationship has to be in the right place, you have to be comfortable enough with each other, and you have to choose something that fits her personality. I would say simpler is better.
I think the most important thing is that your gifts are personal and sincere. My picks for my Valentine’s Day gift guide are products that I like and that I think my wife would like. They may not be right for you and your significant other. They may be perfect. I hope they are. But what I really what is for you to be inspired to find the perfect gift for the woman in your life.
