Truefitt & Hill 1805 Shaving Cream Review

Posted on March 19, 2015October 4, 2017 By Drew

Truefitt & Hill Truefitt & Hill 1805 Shaving Cream Review

It’s freezing today!  Ok, not really, but it’s in the thirties, and I had to break out a sweater.  Two weeks ago when it hit the thirties after being in the teens, I was rocking a t-shirt outside.  So why, today, when the temperature is in the thirties after being in the fifties do I need to bundle up again?  And now the forecast is calling for snow on Friday?  I just want it to be June already, or at least May.  How about Opening Day?  Can we just get there already?

Anyway, I did a lot of digging in my shaving cabinet last week when I was preparing to write my post on spring colognes.  One of the shaving creams I dug out was the Truefitt & Hill 1805.  I also own the aftershave splash and the cologne, and this would have been a great scent to include in the article, but there’s something funny about this shaving cream that I wanted to write about, so I left the cologne off the list in order to discuss the shaving cream here.

For some reason, I always forget that I own this shaving cream.  I don’t know why.  I like it a lot, I always have a wonderful shave with it, and my wife loves the aftershave and cologne.  So what is it about this shaving cream and the “1805” fragrance in general that slips my mind?  Do you have any products like that?  Things you’re always surprised to see when you go to the back of your closet or cabinet.  I’m sure someone would say that it’s just a sign that I have too many shaving products, but that can’t be it!  Haha!

The Truefitt & Hill “1805” has a wonderful scent, described as oceanic.  I’ve seen this description before for other colognes, and have had a hard time describing it in words that I and other everyday people can understand.  But today, I think i figured it out..  Sure an oceanic scent smells like the ocean, but what does that mean.  Well, oceanic scents have a freshness to them that is balanced by a level of what I’m calling “brininess”.  Have you ever cured pork chops in a brine before grilling them?  If you have, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.  If you haven’t, then go check out this recipe and have it ready for summer.  Another idea I had about oceanic scents is that they remind me going to the shore for the summer.  Maybe you go to the beach or the sea or seashore or whatever you call it in your part of the world, but for us it’s the shore.  Regardless, when you are beginning your vacation, and you cross that point where you can start to smell the marshes and the ocean, THAT’S what oceanic is to me.  That first true feeling of a summer vacation when you can feel your muscles begin to unwind, and that’s what the T&H “1805” is.

Performance-wise, this cream is outstanding.  Again, I’m always surprised when this tub works it’s way to the back of my shaving cabinet.  Lathering is truly so easy with the cream, you only need a tiny, tiny bit to have your brush popping with lather.   This shaving cream is slick, cushioning, and protective.  It’s an absolute gem, and as such it deserves a much higher place of honor in my rotation than what I have given it.  You can see why Truefitt & Hill holds a royal warrant to H. R. H., The Duke of Edinburgh (that’s Queen Elizabeth’s husband).

A few other side notes about this cream.  The packaging is very sharp, not just on the shaving cream, but also the entire line.  Truefitt & Hill has a great commitment to their lines.  There are many products available in each scent which makes layering a particular fragrance quite easy.  If I was pressed to fault T&H for anything it would be the length of their ingredient list for the cream.  In my opinion, there are a few chemical ingredients that could be dropped from the formulation.  I hardly remember to use this cream, but the strange thing is that it’s also one of my favorites.  I know that makes no sense, but it’s the honest truth.  I would love to hear your experiences with Truefitt & Hill and hear what your favorite fragrance is of theirs.  Drop a comment and let me know!

Regards,

The Art of Shaving “Lavender” Shaving Soap Review

Posted on April 2, 2015October 4, 2017

Today, I decided to take a look at the “Lavender” shaving soap from The Art of Shaving.  A while ago I reviewed the Geo. F. Trumper “Rose” shaving soap.  I figured after a few months it was time to review another one of the big brands.

Musgo Real Classic Scent Shaving Cream Review

Posted on August 26, 2016October 3, 2017

In the traditional wet shaving world there is a lot of discussion around stylish Italian, luxurious British, and artisan American grooming products. Japanese-made shaving gear usually follows closely behind, especially in the hardware discussion. However, there are some neglected products from a particular geographic area which, I think, deserve a seat at that table. I’m talking about The Iberian Peninsula, specifically Spain and Portugal.
