Some of My Favorite Hair Products

Posted on July 24, 2015October 4, 2017 By Drew

When I talk about men’s grooming, I generally discuss traditional wet shaving and men’s fragrance, but there are so many other aspects to mention.  Today I want to talk a little about four of my favorite hair products and run through when I typically use each one.  What I love about all four of these is the level of control I have over my hair with none of that hard, crunchy, flaky residue.  I think we all remember those days in middle school slapping a handful of gel in our hair, thus creating some sort of “hair helmet”.  Maybe that’s why no one used to wear a bike helmet…maybe we were already protected.  Anyway, these products have nothing in common with what you might remember.

Baxter of California Clay Pomade

This is the hair product I reach for what my hair just isn’t doing what I want it to.  I have found that this light-smelling pomade has superior control to tame even the most unruly cowlicks.  All you need is a small dab.  Rub your palms together to warm it up and apply evenly to dry, styled hair to help keep it in place.  Just make sure to start with the back of your head before moving to the front.  This keeps more product where your hair is thicker and less where it’s thinner.

Baxter of California Hard Water Pomade

Yep, two from Baxter of California.  This is the product I use for nights out.  With a light citrus scent and a little shine, I’ll use this pomade for a more formal, slicker look.  Usually, I find that this product works best when applied while my hair is still wet from a shower.  Like the clay pomade, I’ll rub a little in my palms before running my fingers through damp hair.  Again, back to front works best.

Blind Barber “90 Proof” Pomade

You might ask what I’m doing with two different matte finish, heavy control pomades, but I swear I have a good reason.  I have found the Blind Barber Pomades to be a little more nourishing that some others.  So when my hair is feeling dried out or a little too stripped, this pomade helps keep control while adding a little conditioning too.  I also like using this one in the winter for the same reasons.

Clubman Pinaud Eau de Portugal Hair Tonic

The final hair product on this list is the only one that’s not some sort of pomade.  I originally bought this on a whim, just curious to see what it was about, and now it’s without-a-doubt one of my go-tos for everyday use.  This gives me that unstructured, loose hair look (while secretly keeping it under control).  I style my hair loosely with my fingers, shake a few dabs into my palms, and run my hands through my hair.  While it’s drying (it dries quickly!), I’ll use a soft-bristled brush to direct my hair loosely into place.
