I like to rail against many things on social media: untucked shirts, bad movie takes, wannabe dictators, the Dallas Cowboys. But nothing gets me more agitated than bad shoes. You know what I’m talking about. Whether it’s those square-toed monstrosities or cheap glues on soles or, (the worst!) white-soled “dress” sneakers, not much gets me more heated than the attempt to pass off these aberrations as stylish and fashionable. However, as I like to preach, come to me with solutions, not problems. With that in mind, instead of delving deep in my hatred for the wrong shoes, I would like to offer some shoe brands that I really like.
I think these brands offer a much higher quality shoe for the money. Obviously, some of these are more expensive, and that’s okay. It’s important to keep in mind that every shoe brand here offers Blake-stitched or Goodyear-welted soles. That means the old, worn out soles can be removed and new soles can be attached by a cobbler, thus extending the life of your shoes by years or even decades. When compared to the disposable nature of inferior shoes, recraftable shoes have a much more comparable cost-per-wear, if you want to get that calculating. The environmental impact is much smaller as well. For me, it’s about wearing a more timeless and classic shoe, with a round or an almond toe, that will age well and remain wearable years later.
Beckett Simonon – $239
Beckett Simonon is the only Blake stitched shoe on my list, but don’t let that dissuade you. I’ve been a fan of Beckett Simonon for years now. I’ve had these Dean oxfords for close to 8 years! Their shoes are crafted with quality leather, durable soles, and an eye for classic styles. What I truly love about Beckett Simonon is their production process. The shoes are made-to-order to eliminate waste and production costs. Additionally, they pay their entire staff in Bogatá, Colombia a fair wage including health insurance, pensions, and vacation time. Beckett Simonon shoes are a great entry point into the world of quality, leather shoes.
TLB Mallorca – $495
TLB Mallorca is easily the best value on this list (even after tariff-related price increases). I personally own three pairs of their shoes, like these split toe derbies, and I wear them all on a regular basis. Made in Mallorca, Spain, one of the showmaking capitals of the world, these shoes will make you truly appreciate how fine craftsmanship can elevate something to another lever. Crafted with leathers from world-renowned tanneries, shaped with timeless lasts, and close-cut heels, TLB Mallorca shoes are truly Old World style footwear that will draw compliments. But rest assured, they are not eye-catching fash fashion. These shoes, when properly cared for, will last decades and only look better as they age.
Crockett & Jones – $860
The shoemaker that occupies the most space on my shoe rack is, without a doubt, Crockett & Jones. I wear my Pembrokes at least twice a week. If you’re looking for the perfect blend of timeless British styling, quality leathers, and high-level construction, Crockett & Jones is the brand you need. For over 140 years, they have created shoes for King Charles, James Bond, and numerous celebrities and dignitaries. Crockett & Jones shoes tend to be slightly heavier and sturdier than their European contemporaries, but this only adds to their durability and long term comfort. Years later, you may find your Crockett and Joneses look more stylish and feel more comfortable than similarly priced non-English brands.
I’m a firm believer in the mantra “Buy the best you can afford.” That does not mean buy the best available. It means searching for the highest quality product, regardless of brand names or marketing, that fits into your budget. Shoes are no exception to this rule. We spend a large portion of our days standing, walking, waiting, or otherwise on our feet. We should be able to feel as comfortable and as stylish as we can during these times. With these three brands, I hope you are able to find a shoemaker that works for you. If not, drop a comment, and I’ll see if we can’t find one that does.
