It is no surprise that now is a great time for at-home shopping, if you have the means. Brands are offering a variety of deals and promotions to keep sales up. The goal for most of these companies is to just make it through until the majority of retail shoppers return to the marketplace. Even heritage brands like Joseph Cheaney & Sons have been hit by the coronavirus outbreak. They have been making shoes since 1886, and have survived depressions and world wars. I’m pretty confident they will survive this too. As a response, Cheaney launched their first ever mid-season sale in an effort to retain some business and help customers in their time of economic need.
I already own several pairs of Cheaney shoes, and their quality is outstanding. Their leather is soft and thick. The soles are all goodyear welted in Northamptonshire, England. In true British fashion, they are solid and durable. If you are looking for a pair of shoes to last decades, but are also a value shopper like me, Cheaney is the perfect brand to check out. I think they provide one of the best price to quality ratios around.
Regarding sizing, you should remember that an English “F” width is typically equivalent to an American “D” width, and that English number sizes usually run about one full size lower than their American counterparts. For example, I wear an 11D US in Allen Edmonds and size 11 US in Beckett Simonon, and I wear a 10F UK in Cheaney. For you European sizers out there, I wear a 44 EU. This is usually a good approximation, but remember, returns to the UK if you are an American shopper are historically not free. So, if you have any questions about sizing, I would suggest reaching out to the Cheaney team, who have been most helpful to me in the past.
My Cheaney Mid-Season Sale Picks
1. Cheaney Alfred Capped Oxford in Black Calf Leather – The first shoe in any man’s wardrobe should be a black, cap toe Oxford. This one is a classic.
2. Chiswick R Derby in Mahogany Grain Leather – These are the shoes I bought from the sale. Perfect for spring and fall. Cheaney’s grain leather is wonderful, and Dainite soles are ideal for wet weather.
3. Harry II Tassel Loafer in Fox Suede –
A tan pair of suede tassel loafers scream summer. They work well with chinos, linen trousers, and light denim.
4. Arthur III Oxford Brogue in Dark Leaf Calf Leather – After black cap toes, brown wingtips are shoe number two that I would recommend purchasing. This dark leaf color is extremely versatile.
5. Donnington Driving Moccasin Shoe in Sienna Calf Leather – Whether you’re sitting around working from home or taking a quiet drive for a little out of the house time, these drivers are better than any quarantine slipper.
6. Fenchurch Oxford in Black Calf Leather – If black cap toes are too plain for you, and you need a little pattern, try an Adelaide like these.
7. Godfrey D Chelsea Boot in Mocha Calf Leather – Currently, Chelsea boots are a big missing part of my shoe rotation. I need to add these soon.
8. Howard R Loafer in Mahogany Grain Leather – These loafers are a bit unique, but I love the grain leather and Dainite soles. Another great pair for spring and fall.
9. Hudson Penny Loafer in Mocha Calf Leather – Classic, brown penny loafers. I don’t think there’s much more to say.
10. Trafalgar Capped Derby Boot in Burgundy Calf Leather – There are a lot of brown and black shoes on this list, but if you want something with a little pop…
11. Harry Tassel Loafer in Black Calf Leather – Sometimes black Oxfords are too much and brown loafers are too little. A black tassel loafer like these look great with a suit while remaining relatively formal.
12. Jackie III R Chukka Boot in Brown Suede – The comfort of a suede loafer paired with the sophistication of a boot. These will work with everything from a navy suit to denim to chinos.
