I remember getting my hair cut once, and when I was done I spent a few minutes (ok, like a half hour!) looking over their collection of men’s grooming and wet shaving products for sale. As I noticed a grouping of products with a scent described as Spanish Leather, my barber told me, “My wife just loves that fragrance on me. It’s her favorite.” Well, now I had to try it! What was this Spanish Leather all about? I chose to go with the Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather shaving cream and cologne for this review. Trumpers also offers a Spanish Leather skin food, which I didn’t buy, but I am a big fan of the Coral skin food.
I’ll admit, I was skeptical about picking the Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather shaving cream for this review. I have not had great success with their shaving soaps in the past. However, I figured this was a shaving cream and not a shaving soap, so I wanted to see if there was much of a difference there was between the two. Of the main British men’s grooming companies, like Truefitt & Hill, D.R. Harris, and Taylor of Old Bond Street, Trumper’s is definitely the one with which I am least familiar, so I was looking forward to this review from that standpoint too.
Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather Cologne
I want to start with the fragrances of this Spanish Leather first, because it is a bit unique. It definitely doesn’t smell like a leather I’m typically used to. I was expecting something like Tom Ford’s Tuscan Leather, and I got nothing like that. I think the Trumper Spanish Leather cologne could best be described as a spicy barbershop scent. For me one of the drawbacks of a traditional barbershop fragrance is that they usually work best in spring and summer. Think of this as something like a barbershop scent for colder months. It’s just perfect for fall. Now, it is a cologne, so the longevity is not there like some stronger EdTs and EdPs, but I got a good five hours or so out of it, and I’d call that decent for what it is. If you’re looking for a light, refreshing fragrance for fall, this is a nice, inexpensive one to pick up.
Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather Shaving Cream
As I mentioned above, I was nervous to try this shaving cream. I’ve had difficulty building a lather with Trumper’s shaving soaps in the past, so I my expectations were low. Well, boy was I wrong! This is one of the slickest, most comfortable shaving creams I have ever used. For me, when it comes to shaving creams, my benchmarks are a few of the other British brands. The Trumper Spanish Leather shaving cream is up there with the best of them. It takes water so easily and builds mounds of lather. I had my best results by simply squeezing a small dollop right into my pre-soaked brush and built the lather right on my face. I added some water to the cream and brush here and there as I went along building and building up the lather. (Are you a face or a bowl latherer? I’ve always been a face-latherer personally.)
Shaving with this cream was a real joy. I mean, it honestly felt as slick as a some soaps, but still with the cushion of a cream. I really can’t believe I waited this long to try a Geo. F. Trumper shaving cream. And with a cream like this, who needs a shaving soap anyway?
Conclusion
The Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather shaving cream is a must-buy. I’m now so excited to continue exploring the world of Trumper’s shaving creams. If you like the fragrance pick up the cologne too, they pair very well together. Just be prepared for some limited longevity. I would also suggest checking out the Spanish Leather Skin Food. I wasn’t able to review it, but I have loved the other Trumper’s Skin Foods (Coral and Lime) I’ve used in the past, so I feel pretty safe suggesting this too. So what Trumper’s shaving cream should I try next? Let me know in the comments below!
