I hear all the time Father’s Day shopping is so hard. I have no idea what to get my dad, my husband, my grandfather. For me it’s pretty easy. I’m a dad. I just think, “What would I want?” I think as a father myself I have a unique perspective. I know what really gets used and what languishes in the back of the sock drawer never to see the light of day.
In truth shopping for dads is difficult. Men, especially fathers, can be a fickle bunch. We know what we like, we know what works for use, and we usually don’t like to stray too far from that comfort zone. Of course, there are always exceptions. If something seems “really cool” we’re probably willing to try it. However, most times we think the gifts are just like that thing we already have, but not as good.
So there’s the rub. You have to find the coolest gifts that are actually better than the things they already have. Bonus points if they don’t have it yet or have been meaning to buy it for themselves. So I present to you my cologne and sock free Father’s Day 2019 Gift Guide.
Father’s Day 2019 Gift Guide
L.L. Bean Leatherman ($70) – I received a Leatherman several years ago, and probably not a week goes by that I don’t find myself pulling it out of my desk for some home project. It’s great for little fixes, replacing batteries, and anything else the kids might need. Such a great Father’s Day gift.
Taste of Dibruno ($55) – You know what dads love? Snacks. You know what else I love? Dibruno Brothers. This is one of my all time favorite Philly shops. Definitely worth a stop if you’re ever in the City of Brotherly Love.
“Jaws” Cufflinks ($145) – I can’t say too much about these. “Jaws” is one of my favorite movies. I would wear these cufflinks all the time. I would even find more excuses to wear French cuff shirts.
Leather Shoe Horn ($55) – One of the simplest ways to take care of your shoes is to use a shoe horn instead of jamming your feet in. Help Dad take care of his with this little guy.
The World Atlas of Whiskey ($30) – Does your dad like a drink every now and then, but doesn’t really know where to get started. This book will help educate him and maybe you can even share a drink together.
Tartan Flask ($59) – And where are you going to put that whiskey?
Persol 649 Sunglasses ($260) – You know what else dads love? Steve McQueen. These are the sunglasses the classic movie star worn in movies like The Thomas Crown Affair. Help Dad feel as cool as Bullitt.
“Band of Brothers”/”The Pacific” Boxed Set ($65) – These two miniseries are two of the best WWII shows in the history of entertainment. Packaged together they will provide your dad with hours of enjoyment.
Vintage Backgammon Set ($77) – You’ve got the snacks. You’ve got the drinks. Now it’s time to share them with the old man. Imagine squaring up in a classic game of backgammon over a couple of cold beers. Sounds like a perfect evening to me.
I hope this Father’s Day 2019 Gift Guide helped you pick out that perfect gift, or at least gave you some needed inspiration. Hey, you could even pass this on to your loved ones if you’re a dad yourself. Wishing you all a Happy Father’s Day!
