Dr. Jon’s Soap Co. Classic Shaving Soap Review

Posted on March 26, 2015October 4, 2017 By Drew

Dr. Jon's Soap Co. Dr. Jon’s Soap Co. “Classic” Shaving Soap Review

A couple of years ago, my wife and I were out in Northern California, specifically the San Francisco and Palo Alto areas, for a family event.  I absolutely love it out there, and hope to settle in that area some day.  I love the food out there.  The people are amazing.  And who wouldn’t want to be that close to wine country?  On a side note, if you ever get out that way and are looking for a vineyard to visit, you will not regret the drive to Pride Mountain Vineyards.  The hotel we stayed in grew rosemary everywhere.  You could find the herb in pots all throughout the central courtyard, outside the hotel, even in the lobby.  As you might expect, the hotel smelled incredible.  That smell permeating the whole hotel could have been the inspiration for the base of Dr. Jon’s “Classic” shaving soap (I wonder if Dr. Jon has been there…).  Sitting on top of that herbal base are top notes of unbelievably bright and fresh citrus notes.  When you pair the eye-popping citrus with the woodsy, herbal base, I’m right back in California, in my happy place.  Ok, so it’s a little tricky to shave with that big of a grin on my face, but it’s worth it.

If you remember, I wrote a review of Dr. Jon’s “Big Green Monster” shaving soap several weeks ago, and I figured the best way to review the “Classic” would be to compare the two.  To start, both have incredible labels.   Dr. Jon’s has some of the best packaging I’ve seen.  All of their labels really stand out among the ever-growing crowd of shaving products.  The scent of the “Classic” is bright and bold just like the “BGM”.  However, while the “BGM” smacks you in the face, the “Classic” is a little more refined leaving you awakened and refreshed.  I love both scents but they are quite different stylistically.  The “Classic” creates outstanding lather as well, using the same soap to water ratio as the BGM.  The soaps from Dr. Jon’s tend to use a little more water and need a little less soap than other manufacturers.  This is a good thing.  I have found that a softer brush tends to work a little better with these soaps too.  I have produced the best results with the Semogue 1305 and the Wet Shaving Products’ “Prince” Silvertip.  One point to note is that the “Classic” is a little softer than the “BGM”.  I confirmed that this is normal with the manufacturer.  It’s simply a result of how the essential oils for each fragrance blend react with the soap.  Finally, the performance of Dr. Jon’s “Classic” shaving soap is exceptional.  These soaps have quickly become some of my absolute favorites.  I think it’s due to the composition, but they are slick like a soap and cushioning like a cream.  I still have the “Hex” to try for an upcoming review, and after that I’m sure I’ll be looking into more.

I wanted to make a few comments here about Dr. Jon’s Handcrafted Soap Co. as a whole too.  In all of my dealings with this company so far, I have found that the folks there are incredibly nice.  As a company, they donate their time and/or money to charity every month.  In February they donated ten percent of their sales to The Humane Society.  Ten percent!  That’s huge.  What I’m saying is that these are good people who produce fantastic products, which I will always endorse.

If you’ve tried any other scents from Dr. Jon’s, or if you have any thoughts on the ones I’ve reviewed so far, let me know.  I’d love to hear from my readers.

Regards,

Razorok XX Shaving Soap and Aftershave Review

Posted on October 19, 2016October 4, 2017

When I was in high school I took a class on Roman history that included a two week trip to italy. It was one of my most memorable experience as a teenager. I fell in love with the country, the architecture, the style, the food, everything. The first week of the trip was spent exploring Rome and visiting so many of the ruins we had studied. Then we drove south for a week visiting Capri and Sorrento. On that drive we stopped for lunch in Sperlonga, the summer villa of the Emperor Tiberius. The Razorock “XX” shaving soap and aftershave take me back to that drive through the Italian countryside.

Shave and Groom: Barberry Coast Ascent Shaving Soap

Posted on December 22, 2014October 4, 2017

I don’t usually review a product I know nothing about.  Usually I’ve heard something or seen comments on some shaving forum or seen a YouTube review or something.  However, the Barberry Coast Shave Co. was entirely new to me until a few months ago when we started following each other…

Omega 10048 Pro 48 Boar Shaving Brush Review

Posted on January 19, 2017October 4, 2017

New year, same me. I’m back at it again with the men’s shaving product reviews. Today I’m taking a look at the Omega 10048 boar bristle shaving brush. This brush can also go by the names “Pro 48” or “Forty Eight 48”. This is one of two Omega brushes I’ve been using for the past six months or so.
