One of the things I love to use for my style inspiration is film. I get so much inspiration from movies (and television), and it seems like readers are finding this useful too. My recent post on the style of the show Billions is quickly becoming a top post. Now, I don’t try to mimic the characters in these shows and movies, but I definitely like to pull elements from them and see what I can put together. I’d like to start doing this more. So today I want to take a look and see what I can do with some Dirty Rotten Scoundrels style.
Ok, first things first. If you haven’t ever seen Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, go watch it…like right now. I think it’s one of the funniest movies ever made. And the style in the movie is amazing. From Michael Caine’s elegance, to Steve Martin’s French Riviera casual, to some killer black tie, this film has some killer style moments. And let’s not forget this.
When I think of the French Riviera, I think of warm weather, sun, beaches, cocktails. And when I think of warm weather style, I think of lightweight wool, linen, poplin, etc. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels style incorporates all of this almost flawlessly and wraps it up in a wonderful comedy about con artists that is as funny today as it was when it came out.
Here is the challenge when trying to pull off your own version of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels style. The looks are definitely stylish, but might be initially scoffed at as too “European”. I personally don’t think so, but I can see why some people might be a little apprehensive about trying them on an average Saturday night. I have a real simple solution. Save it for the right place. Your next beach vacation, a cocktail party, a trip to nice casino, date night by the water.
Formal
This is the ultimate high end, summer cocktail party outfit. Michael Caine could pull this outfit off while going to the grocery store. However, for us mere sartorial mortals, we should keep this one for a special occasion.
Blazer: Brooks Brothers // Trousers: Todd Snyder // Shirt: Harvie & Hudson
Shoes: Hugo Boss // Belt: Saks
Pocket Square: The Tie Bar // Fragrance: Acqua Di Parma
Casual
Did you ever want to wear a little more in the summer than just shorts and a t-shirt? This outfit is just that. It’s light enough to wear in the heat, but takes the look to the next level without looking too over the top. Oh, and if you’re concerned about the hat, a little confidence goes a long way.
Jacket: Hickey Freeman // Chinos: Bonobos // T-shirt: Todd Snyder
Hat: Banana Republic // Belt: H&M
Shoes: Rivieras // Fragrance: Creed
Beach
I had a friend once who was so excited to show me his new flip-flops with a bottle opener built in. He turned out to not be a very good friend. A little style on the beach can make a huge difference. A collared shirt, a sharp towel, something interesting to read; all of these can help you stand out a little more than your average bro in a tank top.
Swim Trunks: Polo Ralph Lauren // Shirt: Crosby & Howard // Sandals: Jerusalem Sandals
Sunglasses: Ray-Ban // Towel: Laguna Beach
Book: Men and Manners // Fragrance: Atelier Cologne
So, what do you think? Are you ready to take a stab at a little Dirty Rotten Scoundrels style? Let me know in the comments what you think, and if you’re game to give it a go!
