As I have mentioned recently, I started playing around with aftershaves more. I think I had some sort of subconscious resistance to aftershaves based in that horrible burning pain I experienced in middle school when trying to use aftershave for the first time. Of course back then I had no idea what I was doing with an aftershave, so I used way too much and used terrible stuff that I think was created just to burn the skin. Today I know better, and as I experiment with more aftershaves my fear dissipates. As I mentioned in my review of the Ogallala Bay Rum, Sage and Cedar aftershave, the burn from a quality aftershave like that was more of a soothing heat than a chemical burn. My experience with the Captain’s Choice “North” aftershave has been another wonderful experience brought about by my foray into aftershaves.
Captain’s Choice is probably best known for their Bay Rum (which I also plan on reviewing at some point). If you don’t have time to wait for me to review it, here is a great video review from Nick Shaves on YouTube. Captain’s Choice is also known for their “Cat O’ Nine Tails” aftershave, which accentuates the burn associated with a traditional Bay Rum. However, I don’t know if I’m ready for that one yet. When I purchased the Captain’s Choice Bay Rum, I also picked up a bottle of their “North” aftershave. After reading all the reviews online about their Bay Rum, I was pretty sure I was going to like it. However, I didn’t know about the “North”. It’s pretty hard to find anything on it, so I just wasn’t sure what to expect.
What I discovered in the “North” was a fantastic aftershave, perfect for Fall and Winter. The packaging alone is something to praise. The bottle and label are sharp-looking, and the pour spout allows you complete control over how much aftershave you dispense. The aftershave itself performs wonderfully. If there is a burn, it is only more of a tingle. My skin feels protected and moisturized all day. The scent is just wonderful. The labels boasts pine needles and juniper berries, and that is exactly what you get. The fresh scent of a Northern American pine forest just screams cold weather to me, making this aftershave perfect for this time of year. As I have mentioned before, like cologne, aftershaves need to breathe a little before the true scent comes out. So don’t whiff the top of the bottle to get an indication of the smell, apply a little on the back of your hand, and experience it for yourself. For less than twenty dollars you can pick up a bottle on either the Captain’s Choice website or their Etsy Store. I highly recommend this aftershave heading into these colder months. Stand out with a scent a few miles “North” of your typical Bay Rum.
