An Oscar-Worthy Education – A New Project

Posted on May 6, 2016November 14, 2017 By Drew

I love movies. Some people might call me a movie buff or aficionado, but I wouldn’t. Here’s my problem. I’ve seen a fair number of good to great movies, but the number of bad movies I’ve seen far outweighs them. I always seem to default to action movies and comedies, not that that’s a bad thing, but I would like to broaden my horizons.

Several recent movie-related incidents brought my film-knowledge deficit to light. First, I decided to watch Pixels this week. I knew it wasn’t going to be good, but I thought it might be a guilty pleasure type movie. Something that would make me chuckle with references to old video games, etc. I was not expecting one of the worst movies i’ve ever seen. I’m not writing this to bash Pixels, but what struck me after watching it was the thought of how much time I waste on bad movies when I could be watching something much better. The second thing that happened this week actually happened this morning. I was working out, listening to my latest audiobook (my new obsession while exercising or driving!), and suddenly the characters were referencing Blade Runner, a movie I have not yet seen. I immediately stopped my book, switched to my kettlebell playlist on Spotify, and kept going. I get it, a movie released in 1982 is well past the window for getting upset over a spoiler, but that doesn’t mean I had to listen. Now I can’t resume my book until I watch Blade Runner, which, of course, is happening tonight. I need to keep listening! But I want to try to avoid a situations like this again. I should have watched a classic movie such as Blade Runner before now. I just kept putting it off. Well, no more!

For years I have wanted to watch every Best Picture Winner in order, and no time is better than the present. I know there are great movies that did not win Best Picture, and I know there are some bad ones that did, but I figure this is a great place to start. I went through the list today. I’ve seen thirty-four of the eighty-eight winners so far, and I am going to rewatch the ones I’ve already seen.

I plan on watching one movie per week followed up with a post on Friday with my thoughts and takeaways from the movie. I’ll be sure to include any links where the movies can be streamed, rented, or bought. Even with my goal of one movie per week, this will probably take me close to two years. I’m very excited to get started on this, and I hope you enjoy it too!

Movie Night: The Broadway Melody-1929

Warning: spoilers ahead…not that it matters.

I’m going to be honest here. I was not looking forward to this one. I’ve challenged myself with remaining open-minded. Willing to not pre-judge any of the movies I’m going to watch. But I had seen this one before, and I remember disliking it. A lot. Even with the wine. I figured this time I would be watching sober, thus making it more arduous.

Movies for Guys: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Last night I had the wonderful opportunity to see one of the all-time classic movies the way it was meant to be seen. On the big screen. As part of the TCM Big Screen Classics program, my local theater was showing…

Movie Night: “Wings” (1928)

Posted on May 13, 2016November 14, 2017

Kicking off my journey through the list of Best Picture Winners is 1927’s “Wings”. Until 2011, this was the only silent movie to win Best Picture. Silent movie is a bit of a misnomer though, as this movie has soundtrack playing throughout the feature. The story revolves around two small-town rivals, the local rich kid and the average Joe, both in love the same woman and who flying against the Germans in World War I. This was the first time I had seen this movie.
