24 Sweaters for Men This Fall

Posted on November 6, 2017November 5, 2017 By Drew

Finally fall has returned to the Pennsylvania! Time to break out those sweaters and jumpers, men! I love sweater weather. Give me a pair of jeans, some brogues, an OCBD, and a V-neck sweater, and I’m a happy man. I think what I love about sweaters and sweater weather so much is how much easier it makes layering an outfit. The trouble with buying sweaters for men is making sure you have a variety of materials and thicknesses.

There was a point in my life where I had sworn off cardigans, turtlenecks and v-neck jumpers solely relying on the basic wool, crewneck sweater to get by. I still love my crewnecks, but i reserve them for cozy days when I am looking to remain casual and comfortable. I don’t normally wear button up shirts under a crewneck; it looks too bulky at the neck. So I keep it simple with an undershirt. Merino v-necks (and cashmere ones when I can find good deals) are my go-to with collared shirts. I think the V created by the combination of the sweater and shirt collars creates a nice narrowing feature on my face and enhances the V shape of my chest. Turtleneck sweaters I have recently come to appreciate for their warmth, and it’s always fun to look like a Bond villain. And cardigans, are new to me, but I like the idea of using them as a casual blazer substitute.

Today I’ve pulled together twenty-four sweaters that I really love this fall. I’ve tried to find a varied mix of styles, colors, patterns, and prices. Sweaters for men are like suits, in that quality and comfort do come with a price tag. Wool can become quite expensive, especially when venturing into the realms of types like cashmere and alpaca. But one of the things I pride myself on with Tailor & Barber is providing value-oriented options. To me value doesn’t necessarily equal low cost. Value is the convergence of price and quality. For example, in the most recent Weekend Reading, I recommended a $1200 blazer that was on sale. That’s pretty pricey for me, but considering the producer, construction, and full retail price, I thought it was a great value.

With all that being said, below are my picks for some great sweaters for men this cold weather season. If you have any questions or any suggestions, please let me know!

Big News from J. Crew! Wider Lapels!

Posted on February 17, 2017October 4, 2017

This is a true story. On Wednesday I was sitting with my wife at the kitchen catching up on the day. The newest J. Crew catalog had arrived that day, and I was flipping through it as we talked. I started to explain how I really liked the fit and fabrics of J. Crew’s suits (as a guy who’s 6 foot tall and weighs 220 pounds, I prefer the Crosby suits to the Ludlow suits). However, my biggest issue with J. Crew’s suits is that the lapels on the Ludlow suits are 2 ½ inches wide and the lapels on the Crosby suits are 2 ¾ inches wide. I think these are proportionally too slim for my build. I was literally mid-sentence explaining this to my wife when I turned the page and saw this:
