It’s Easier To Shop As A Guy

Two nights ago my wife and I were putting together a Fall clothing order for the family online from J. Crew.  They are currently running a 25% off promotion through Halloween, and we thought it was a great way to get some new clothes for everyone this Autumn.  She was thinking about getting this sweater, but, take a look, the sizes run from XXX-Small through X-Large.  What is that about?  My opinion is that it is a marketing “gimmick” to have as many customers as possible feel good about their size; it’s not maliciously done and I have no real issue with it, but it is a “gimmick” nonetheless.  The women buying XXX-Small feel good about themselves because society has taught women to be as skinny as they can.  The women buying a Small feel good because they might be a Medium or a 8 or 10 or something else at some other store.  What  J. Crew has essentially done is shift the size scale to offer more sizes to more customers.  Instead of the simple three offerings of Small, Medium and Large, J. Crew has put…

The Book That Changed The Way I Live

I will freely admit that I have recently hopped on the Ryan Holiday bandwagon.  I only “discovered” him this past year, but he has quickly become one of the more influential people in my life even though I have never met him.  The fact that he is only twenty-seven years old as well is not lost on me either.  He is wizened beyond his years and has become more well-read in those twenty-seven years than most people become in their lifetime.  However, what Holiday has done to inspire me most is not his list of career accomplishments, nor is it his gargantuan reading list and writing credits.  It is the way he views the world.  So, when I found out he was releasing a book detailing the simple, but not easy process to learn how to view the world the same way he does. I bought it immediately, put whatever else I was reading on hold and devoured The Obstacle Is the Way in about a week. I am not going to (nor would I ever attempt to) summarize or paraphrase The Obstacle Is the Way.  You have to read it.  You have to experience the stories…

Charcoal Suit, Navy Suit, Now What?

There are a lot of articles out there on buying your first suit or what to buy out of college for your first interview, etc.  However, this blog is all about breaking your style out of that typical mold in which most of America (and, probably, the world) fits.  I think most guys buy a gray or charcoal suit first.  They probably already have the black dress shoes, and it’s a pretty easy color to match.  From my experience, the next step is usually navy, followed closely by a purchase of tan or brown dress shoes.  And this is where most guys get stuck.  Maybe they go down that dark path of wearing a black suit, which, in my opinion, you should never do unless you’re wearing a tuxedo.  Or maybe this is just where most guys give up and keep buying more gray and blue suits.  There’s nothing wrong with having a closet full of those two colors.  It makes getting dressed in the morning a little easier.  Most shirt and tie combinations will match either color.  You can get away with wearing black or brown shoes with either color, although I prefer brown shoes with…

A Perfect Combination for Under $35

A “Perfect” Combination This post is inspired by one of my Instagram followers who was looking forward to trying a new purchase.  I had recently used the same shaving soap and had followed up the shave with a new aftershave.  What happened next astounded me.  The main scents of these two products blended into some sort of superscent smelling better and lasting longer than either the shaving soap or aftershave alone.  In fact, I enjoyed the new scent so much I didn’t even use cologne that day.  Both the shaving soap and the aftershave are quality products, but have received criticized for being too one dimensional when it comes to their fragrance.  The fact that they could combine in this way made the experience truly exceptional.  What really got me going about this was the total cost of this combination.  It was significantly lower than most colognes I like with the same longevity.  You can buy them together for around $33 dollars on Amazon and they will last for months.  Anyway, I made the recommendation to my Instagram follower that he combine the two, and realized I had to share this with my readers too. Shaving…

Are There Too Many Subscription Services?

The other day I was reading through Twitter when I can across a tweet promoting a subscription box specializing in snacks and candy from Thailand.  Instantly, I thought to myself, “There really is a subscription service for everything.”  So, of course, that question led to this post.  Are there too many subscription services?  Well, it’s not actually that simple.  The answer is sort of yes and no.  One the real beauties of the Internet are the low-costs available to businesses.  This and other low barriers to entry have given opportunities to many, many niche business which could not have existed in pre-Internet, brick-and-mortar days.  If you think about it, even Amazon.com started as somewhat of a niche business (a bookstore).   The next step in the evolution of the niche industry is the subscription service.  What business wouldn’t love a steady flow of revenue regardless of whether or not you were planning on buying or using their product or service.  You probably wouldn’t buy and read a newspaper every day or a magazine every month if you didn’t…

I Finally Found a Skincare Regimen that Works

Peter Thomas Roth Acne Kit I haven’t truly suffered from acne, but like most guys, I haven’t had perfect skin either.  Throughout my teen and adult life, I’ve definitely had my fair share of blemishes, pimples, zits, blackhead, whiteheads, etc.  Regardless, my skin has not been what I want it to be.  I will freely admit that part of my problem, especially when I was younger, was not taking care of my face properly.  Another part of the problem was not understanding what it meant to have combination skin and how to take care of it.  As a result, I have tried numerous face cleansers over the years.  Some have worked well, some have not.  Most were very good, just not right for my skin.  Finally, after years of experimentation, I was able to find the right one for me! Peter Thomas Roth Eye Cream My wife uses the Peter Thomas Roth eye cream, and being curious about the brand, I decided to look into it more.  Peter Thomas Roth is a real person who was tired of products that didn’t work for him, so he decided to go ahead and make…
