The Waxed Cotton Jacket: A Fall Classic

I woke up yesterday to walk my dogs early, and it was cold and damp out.  What a truly fitting last day of September.  Today is October 1st, and Fall is really here, not just a date on the calendar.  It’s chilly in the morning.  Next week, the highs will be in the 60s.  Polo shirts are pretty much done until next Spring.  And I just ordered firewood for those cold nights.  I love this weather, and I love the clothes that go along with this weather.  One of those perfect items that just screams Fall is the waxed cotton jacket.  What I love most about waxed cotton jackets is the combination of style, warmth and waterproofing.  On the style front, they don’t look like a rain slicker or puffy Winter coat.  Both of those types of jackets are fine, but they don’t necessarily look as nice as a waxed cotton jacket, which can be as warm or as cool as you want the jacket to be.  Zip it up with a sweater underneath on those really cold mornings or unzip it with an oxford during those warmer, sunny Fall afternoons.  The waxed cotton…

A Proper Fitting Shirt

Bad Fit Vs. Good Fit It’s been said that the clothes make the man, but, in cases of real quality, the man definitely makes the clothes. An elegant shirt has the capacity to improve its wearer’s professional appearance, enhance their image, and even boost their general attractiveness, helping them stand out more.  But regardless of how nice a shirt looks, or what it’s made from, if it doesn’t fit correctly, all of the benefits it brings will be negated. How to find the proper fit You’ve almost certainly seen it: a man wearing his favorite shirt out to a party, strutting around like he’s worth a million bucks.  Only, the shirt’s too big.  It drowns him. It makes him look tiny. His garment may have cost $150, but that won’t stop other party goers whispering behind his back, ‘look, it’s Honey I Shrunk the Kids.’ Each aspect of a shirt should be comfortable on the skin.  It should be snug, yet there ought to be room for the skin to breathe.  The various parts of a shirt will be listed below…

Five Real Reasons Why You Should Switch to a DE Safety Razor

1961 Gillette Sure, you could shave with a DE (double edge) safety razor because that’s “how a man shaves”. Or you could switch because you want to shave the way your grand-pappy did.  You might even switch because you think someday someone will walk into your bathroom, see your shaving setup and be impressed.  Those are all reasons, but they certainly aren’t good reasons for YOU to make the change.  The reasons I just gave above are more about someone else’s perception of you.  That is never a reason to change anything about yourself.  Below you will find a list of real reasons to switch to a DE safety razor that directly affect you. 1. You will get a better shave Without a doubt the most important reason to switch to a DE safety razor is the quality of the shave.  To me a quality shave is marked by the closeness of the shave and the lack of irritation of the skin.  I’m sure your first comment is “well, don’t five blades shave closer than one?”  Absolutely not.  Shaving is not about cutting all the…

I’m Giving Up on Shaving Creams

I think I’m giving up on shaving creams for good. I will probably only use shaving soaps from here on out.  I’m not sure what it is, but I almost always have a better shave with soaps over creams.  When I say better, I mean better in almost every way: closer, smoother, better glide, less irritation, and so on. I’m trying to figure out is if this is a normal progression.  Do most wet shavers move from creams to soaps?  Should I also expect my move from cartridge razors to DE safety razors to continue on to straight razors? One of my goals when I started Tailor and Barber was to provide a forum for open discussion on style and grooming topics.  I want all guys to learn from each other, not just provide a lecture/article on topics I find relevant. With this in mind, I want to open up this topic for discussion.  Shaving soaps vs. creams: is it progression or just preference…

Take Your Fall Wardrobe to the Next Level

Happy Autumn! Fall is here!  This is my favorite season.  I love the crispness in the air, the smell of fires sparking in fireplaces, leaf piles, the colors in the trees, and all that wonderful Fall stuff.  It’s “jeans and a sweater” weather, right?  Sure, if you want to blend in and be just another dude.  Don’t get me wrong, I love jeans and sweaters.  It’s a classic outfit that is pretty hard to screw up.  But this Fall, why not compliment those jeans with a little more style: try rocking a sport coat. Right about now, you’re probably thinking, “Great! I thought I had to pack up my blue blazer after Labor Day.  This is going to be easy!”  Sure, that’s one way to go.  A blue blazer is timeless and goes with almost anything.  But remember, the key to matching other clothes with jeans is texture.  Denim is a pretty tough and textured fabric, and it needs texture to compliment it.  Cotton is a wonderful fabric, but I don’t think it can stand up to denim texturally and cotton doesn’t…

Product Review: Barrister and Mann Roam Shaving Soap

I ordered a pack of samples from Barrister & Mann several weeks ago, and had been really looking forward to trying some of their soaps.  I had begun to wonder if the only high quality shaving soaps came from Europe when I started hearing some good things about this Cooperstown, NY, USA based company, but I had to try for myself.  Because the Barrister & Mann soaps are made in small batches, the samples available are dependent on their current production schedule.  Once I received my samples, which were individually packaged and easy to sort, I had to decide which one to try first.  So I went back to Barrister & Mann to read some descriptions.  Here is the description posted for the “Roam” scent: A real cowboy “Inspired by the rugged individualism of American cattle ranchers, we blended the aromas of real pipe tobacco absolute, smoke, leather, herbs, damp earth, and grass into a bright, robust scent reminiscent of life on the open range. Timeless and virile, Roam hearkens back to the days of the Old West.” Giddy-up! Below the descriptions of their soaps, Barrister & Mann advises in bold that their soaps are…

My 7 Favorite Fall Colognes

The seasons are starting to change, and Fall is fast approaching.  As the days turn cooler, some of those Summer colognes aren’t going to pack the punch they did in the dog days of July.  Colognes can be dramatically affected by the temperature.  I also think it’s an extra touch to match your fragrance to the season.  It’s still more important to choose a cologne that works well with your skin and your body, but choosing one that works well with the weather too is an exceptional way to stand out.  With that in mind, I’ve put together a list of 7 fantastic and unique colognes that are perfect for Fall and Winter.  Some you may have heard of, some may be new to you and some may evoke memories.  I highly recommend any of these for this coming Autumn. Tsar by Van Cleef & Arpels These is nothing about Tsar that isn’t reminiscent of Fall.  With notes of pine, lavender, leather and ceder, this 25 year old fragrance will definitely put you in a Autumnal state of mind.  And because it might not be a cologne you’re…
