My Updated Morning Routine

My Updated Morning Routine What a crazy August it’s been!  I haven’t posted in a few weeks, and I haven’t even had time to get much writing together.  We have this amazing summer babysitter who is a teacher during the school year.  So the only real drawback is that she has to stop a few weeks early to get her classroom ready.  Of course once that happens, the stay-at-home parent, me, becomes the babysitter.  Over the past few weeks I’ve really had to prioritize my time and discover what it takes to help me be a good husband, a good father, and not be an irritable asshole.  I wrote a post a while ago on my morning routine, but I’ve really had to refine it in the last few weeks, so I thought it would be a good time to re-visit this. I used to think that if I was able to get done the things I wanted to do, I would be a happier person and a better father and husband.  However, what I’ve discovered in the past few weeks is that if I get done the things I NEED…

A Gentleman’s Relationship with Nature

A Gentleman’s Relationship with Nature I was going to do my usual weekend reading post, but I only had one other post this week.  So, I felt it was better to get another post out instead.  I’m also curious to see what the readership is like on a Saturday.  I was hesitant to involve the word gentleman, seeing as how gent/gentleman/etc. is so overused these days.  I guess maybe a better word would be Renaissance Man, but I’m trying to propose that style is more than just how you dress and how you shave.  It’s about how you interact with the world around you.  Whether you have relationships with other people, animals, or your environment, you are going interact with your world.  How you choose to behave in that relationship says more about you than any “look”, clothing label, or cologne fragrance ever could. Look, I’ll be honest.  I had never ever heard of Cecil the Lion before this week.  I’m sure I’m like most people in the U.S. in this respect.  However, I’ve been seeing a lot of posts and stories published with the assumption that Cecil…

I’ve Been Frog-Eating

Last week was an incredibly exhausting week.  Between the unsavoury meetings, the endless tasks, and the other things I didn’t want to do, I learned a lot about handling difficult challenges that I needed to complete, regardless of my desire, or lack thereof, to do so.  First and foremost, my appreciation for the things I did want to do grew immensely.  Dinners out with the family, writing, blogging, shave of the day photos; these all suffered last week as a result of my insane schedule.  When I finally got a little time to myself, I really treasured all of those activities so much more. There’s a quote running around the internet attributed to Mark Twain that suggests “if it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning.”  Of course, like anything else on the internet the validity and the source are in question.  However, those factors don’t detract from the value found in the statement.  What I found important is the idea that you’re going to face difficulties in life, and some things are just going to be unpleasant…

4711 Original Eau de Cologne Aftershave Review

Man, Wednesday was just one of those days.  My son was still sick from the day before.  I wasn’t feeling particularly well.  My wife had a Mother’s Day event at the kids’ school.  We had people working in the house all morning.  I didn’t even get to grab a shower until after three in the afternoon.  I felt like Mr. Mom on his first day at home.  We all have days like that, and it’s those kinds of days that make catching a few moments to yourself all the more worthwhile.  When I was finally able to grab that shower and enjoy a shave, I knew I needed something a little different.  I was already beat up by the day, so I wanted something a little softer, a little more gentle than some of the more “manly” products out there.  I reached for the 4711 Original Eau de Cologne Aftershave. Before I get into the aftershave too much, I want to give a little history on this fragrance.  The 4711 is the reason we call cologne “cologne”.  Invented in the 1700s in Cologne, Germany, this is likely the first cologne ever created.  You can definitely read…

Shave of the Day: April 13, 2015

Shave of the Day: April 13, 2015 This was such a bright and refreshing shave today!  So many different fruit scents going on.  I know it’s not technically summer yet, but this was a summer shave, and had me feeling like I was sitting on a beach somewhere, with a drink in a coconut shell, topped off with a tiny umbrella. ✤ Shaving Soap ✤ Brush ✤ Razor ✤ Blade ✤ Post-Shave ✤ Cologne…

Shave of the Day: April 9, 2015

Very spicy today!  This morning was a pretty chilly spring morning, somewhere in the 30s, and I decided to get a little spicy with it.  I’m still testing the Spiced Rum Shave Soap from All Soaps on Deck for an upcoming review, but I had to pair it with the Captain’s Choice Bay Rum.  If you have never used a bay rum before or if you haven’t bought anything from Captain’s Choice before, this is the one to get.  It’s warm, spicy and soothing.  A true classic bay rum.   ✤ Shaving Soap ✤ Brush ✤ Razor ✤ Blade ✤ Post-Shave…
