Shave of the Day: September 9, 2016

Man plans and God laughs, right? Remember on Wednesday when I said I was ready to start cranking out the new content? Well, sometimes a sick wife, a sick dog, and exhausted children suffering through their first week of school take priority. Thursday morning really fell off the wheels when my wife got incredibly sick. I didn’t even get out of my gym clothes for a shower and a shave until 1:00 pm. But I figured I had to get something out, so here I am working on another shave of the day. I have a Fall Essentials post that I’m about halfway through, and I thought I was going to get it out today, but I did not have the time to edit the graphics. That will definitely run Monday though, so be sure to check it out! I’m also putting together a review of the Penhaligon’s No. 33 skin care line. So look for that later next week. Let’s talk a little about this shave. Soap Commander puts out one of the best one-two punches with their shaving soap and aftershave balm products. I really like the courage scent, and…

Finally, I think I can start cranking out some new content, including grooming product reviews. Yesterday was back to school day! My daughter started first grade, which is insane. I can’t believe she’s already in grade school. It seems like she was born just last week. Anyway, summer is tough for writing. There are house projects, day trips, vacations, no babysitters, sick dogs, and so on. But now I have some days back, and some time to write. Let’s get on to this shave. I don’t think I’ve used this shaving cream in over a year. But right now I’m trying to use every summer scent I have left in my shaving cabinet before that fall weather hits. I’m excited to break out my fall fragrances, but I still love my citrus scents too, and Taylor’s “Eton” shaving cream is packed with citrus, plus that wonderful Taylor of Old Bond Street performance. A quick note here about Folsom & Co. I really enjoyed their aftershaves, but it seems like they might have stopped production. Their website was not pulling up for me, and I couldn’t find an online retailer still stocking…

How do you break a week-long heat wave? With a ton of menthol, of course. Last week was brutal here. Every day the heat index soared into the 100s. The heat was so oppressive, it was hard to do anything. Even running errands drained me. On top of that both my son and I came down with some sort of summer cold. Probably from going in and out between a thirty degree temperature change. Anyway, I’m feeling much better, and I’m ready to get back into posting content as many days as possible. There’s just one little problem… School doesn’t start for another two weeks, but our babysitter (who is fantastic!) is also a kindergarten teacher who had to leave us to prep for her upcoming school year. That puts me in charge of most daily activities for the kids until after Labor Day. Looks like a lot of night writing sessions for me. Now, about this shave. This is a summer shave if ever there was one. Jam-packed with menthol and citrus, this one was so refreshing. And the Juniper Sling is a great fragrance to finish it off. I know summer is…

Shave of the Day: August 9, 2016

Man, I am sorry for the long break in posts. Last week got a little crazy. The kids went down the shore for the entire week with their grandparents. While they were away, my wife and I decided to dismantle and reassemble our entire basement. We threw out any toys that were no longer useable, donated a large portion of stuffed animals to Opportunity House, and donated the rest of the toys and some games to Cradles to Crayons. Our kids had way too many toys, and all they would do is jump from one thing to the next, leaving a path of destruction in their wake. We decided the solution to this cycle of disarray followed by massive cleaning was to aggressively thin and organize their toys. Our process was relatively simple. We pulled everything out, and I mean everything. Every toy, every game, every craft supply. Once we knew what we were dealing with, we were able to sort into trash, donate, and keep. With our toys labelled “keep” split into categories, we took a trip to The Container Store. The Smart Store bins, specifically small and medium, were perfect for keeping categories stored neatly. They also seem…

You know whose shaving gear I don’t use enough? Wet Shaving Products. They make some fantastic shaving supplies. I’ve reviewed one of their brushes and two of their soaps (Tobacco and Blackbeard). Despite my positive ratings I don’t break out these soaps as much as I should. I’ve had some trouble breaking in this brush (which is why I haven’t reviewed it yet). My lather this morning was the best I have ever produced with it. WSP’s shaving soaps make your other products better. Today’s forecast calls for thunderstorms all day, and I’ve always found that Green Irish Tweed is a perfect cologne for rainy days. Well, I haven’t had any GIT for a while, not since my bottle shattering drop last year. Yes, that one was painful, and the whole house smelled of the cologne for several weeks. You might think that sounds like a good thing, but after a day or two it becomes quite bothersome. So today I decided to go with another option, Wet Shaving Products’ shaving soap based on the iconic cologne from Creed. It’s absolutely perfect for a rainy summer day…

Here’s something I don’t say that often. This was a big sports weekend for me. I don’t get too many of those. Sure, I’ll watch the major sports, but for me F1 is my favorite sport. At this point it’s the only sport I watch regularly. On top of that, the Crossfit Games were held this weekend. They are so much fun to watch. What makes them so exciting is the fact that I have done a lot of the same workouts (on a much less intense level). Having that frame of reference allows me to appreciate that much more how dominate those athletes are. I think it’s the only sport I enjoy watching the women as much as the men. Maybe swimming and gymnastics in The Olympics too? Anyway, this weekend was a blast, and I’m so thankful my wife was took on some extra kid-watching duties so I could pack it all in. Today I decided to turn my shave den into an old school Italian barber shop. This is my first foray into the world of Tcheon Fung Sing shaving products (yes, Italian, not Chinese). I will…
